This picture of neat, clean, and safe to live in housing is something that is often taken for granted by many. But adequate, affordable housing, a basic human right, is out of reach for many of the world’s population. Alarming facts:
1.6 billion are living in substandard housing
1 billion are living in slums
This is nothing to take lightly, or pretend that it’s not happening in your own vicinity. That’s why it’s so important to remember those without adequate shelter on Monday, October 1, which is World Habitat Day.
With the theme of “Many Homes, One Community,” the purpose is to raise awareness of the pivotal role of housing in a community’s development.
During October and November, hundreds of events will take place worldwide. They will range from flash mobs and parades, to forums and contests.
What can we do to keep the dream flourishing? Get educated, volunteer time, donate what you can, and advocate for those in need. This is not a privilege, but a definite priority.
